Medical Training and Surgical Career
Patrick Darnley Hudson trained at Westminster Hospital Medical School in London and in the United States, becoming a Board-Certified Plastic and Hand Surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His clinical career spanned decades, marked by leadership roles, team-building, and the technical precision of complex surgery.
IRB Leadership
He went on to serve as a full-time Chair of an Institutional Review Board (IRB). In that position, he oversaw the ethical review of research protocols, guided investigators through FDA and NIH requirements, and worked to safeguard the dignity of participants in clinical trials.
Psychotherapy and Coaching
Beyond surgery, Patrick pursued advanced degrees in Counseling, Medical Ethics, and Liberal Arts. He completed five years of Jungian psychoanalysis and is Board Certified as a Coach, working exclusively with physicians, surgeons, and leaders. He is also a Fellow of the National Anger Management Association, perhaps the only physician with this credential.
Writing and Teaching
Patrick is the author of three books published, with more in progress. His writing ranges from existential psychology (In Search of Meaning: Frankl, Yalom, and the Inner Life of Physicians), to leadership (The Physician as Leader: Essential Skills for Doctors Who Didn't Plan to Lead) He continues to write essays and courses that integrate medicine, ethics, psychology, and lived experience, making these works accessible through online education and coaching.
