Coaching for Physicians

Coaching for Physicians

I am a physician who became a coach. After decades as a surgeon, psychotherapist, and research board member, I now work with doctors who find themselves under pressure. Coaching here is not about reinvention, it's about integration. You don't have to start over. You have to gather the threads and see what they mean now.

Anger and Emotional Mastery

Anger is part of medicine: in the OR, on the ward, in the boardroom. Left unmanaged, it isolates. Harnessed well, it can protect values and restore dignity. As a fellow of the National Anger Management Association (and perhaps the only physician with that credential), I guide doctors in turning anger from liability into strength.

The "Disruptive" Physician

Too often, physicians labeled as "disruptive" are not reckless—they are principled, outspoken, or simply overwhelmed by a broken system. Coaching here focuses on distinguishing personality from pathology, helping doctors regain influence without losing integrity.

Burnout and Renewal

Medicine takes its toll. Burnout is not a sign of weakness but a natural consequence of impossible demands. Coaching helps physicians rediscover clarity, boundaries, and meaning—so that exhaustion becomes not an endpoint but a signal for change.

Leadership in Medicine

Leading doctors is unlike leading any other group. Physicians value autonomy, precision, and skepticism. Coaching helps transform these traits into assets—building teams that function not by command, but by trust, clarity, and influence.

Marriage and Relationships

Physician marriages are different. Long hours, call schedules, and divided attention can strain even the strongest partnerships. Sometimes both partners are physicians—sharing a unique shorthand and unique stresses. Other times, only one is a doctor, and the imbalance of demands can feel bewildering to the non-physician spouse. Coaching in this domain strengthens connection, helps partners navigate conflict, and restores intimacy where medicine has intruded.

Time Management

Time is a physician's rarest resource. Too often, it feels stolen by demands that do not serve patients or purpose. Coaching helps doctors reclaim time, prioritize with integrity, and reconnect with what makes medicine a vocation, not just a job.

Communication and Influence

Words can heal—or escalate conflict. Whether with patients, families, colleagues, or boards, physicians benefit from deliberate communication. Coaching here includes emotional intelligence, conflict navigation, and practical tools for influence.

Midlife and Identity

Many doctors reach midlife with a mix of success and emptiness. The question shifts from What do I achieve? to Who am I now? Coaching addresses midlife transitions, identity crises, and the longing for authenticity that often emerges when career and personal life collide.

Meaning in Medicine

What once felt like a calling can become blurred by bureaucracy and exhaustion. Physicians often ask: Why am I still doing this? Coaching here focuses on reconnecting with medicine as vocation, rediscovering personal values, and finding meaning even in a commodified system.

Retirement Transitions

Retirement for physicians is never just about stopping work. It touches identity, purpose, and belonging. Coaching helps doctors navigate the shift from practice to post-practice life—whether that means redefining vocation, mentoring, or simply learning how to rest without guilt.

Emotional Intelligence and Soft Skills

Every physician knows the science; fewer have been taught the art. Emotional intelligence (the ability to recognize, manage, and respond to emotions—your own and others') is the foundation. Soft skills—listening, influence, conflict navigation, empathy—are its expression in daily practice. Together they are what allow doctors not only to diagnose and treat, but to connect, to lead, and to heal in ways no algorithm can replace. Coaching here turns abstract ideas into lived skills you can use tomorrow on the ward, in the OR, or at home.

How We Work Together

Each coaching relationship is personal and confidential. I draw from experience in surgery, psychotherapy, ethics, and decades of working with doctors. I work exclusively with physicians. Together, we focus not on performance alone, but on restoring humanity within medicine.
