Stethoscope and fountain pen on manuscript — medicine meets writing.

Writing: The Work Beneath the Words

Essays and reflections from a surgeon who never stopped asking why.

For decades, I wrote to think.

Now I write so others can breathe.

Writing was how I stayed sane in medicine.

What began as a way to make sense of fatigue and failure became a conversation with meaning itself.

These essays trace that journey—from vocation to disillusionment, from anger to acceptance, and, when possible, back toward hope.

Each piece stands alone, yet together they form a kind of anatomy: an anatomy of vocation.

You'll find reflections on anger, burnout, ethics, leadership, and the slow rediscovery of medicine as something more than a system.

They come from different seasons of a medical life—five decades of watching the profession change and trying to stay human inside it.

The tone is not nostalgic but remembering. Not perfect, but precise.

Writing, for me, remains a diagnostic act: of self, of profession, and sometimes of the world that shaped both.

My work explores what it means to be a physician (and a human being) under pressure.

These pages are not polished answers; they are field notes from a life inside medicine, leadership, ethics, and emotional intensity.

Some are practical. Others are philosophical.

All are written with the same intent: to offer clarity, perspective, and a way forward for those who still care.

You can explore this work across books, essays, and ongoing reflections.

✒️ Writing Themes

Much of my writing centers on:

     - Leadership in medicine — when you didn't ask for it

     - Anger and emotion — especially among physicians

     - Burnout, meaning, and moral distress

     - Communication and conflict

     - Time, ethics, and existential psychology

     - The physician's soul — and what happens when the calling fades

I don't write from theory. I write from experience — as a surgeon, a psychotherapist, an IRB/ethics chair, and a coach. If something I write resonates, you're likely not alone. That's why I publish.

"The work isn't about becoming someone new. It's about becoming someone whole."
